The Challenge
The Center for the Blind, formerly known as ATCB, transitioned to a for-profit company with a mission to bring braille technology to Ethiopia’s blind and visually impaired community. Their goal? To establish an accessible online platform to connect users with tools, resources, and support.
Our challenge was to design a website that prioritized accessibility while creating a robust foundation for future upgrades.
Our Approach
At Malefia, we believe technology should serve everyone. For this project, we:
- Designed and developed a clean, user-friendly interface tailored to the blind and visually impaired community.
- Integrated accessibility-first features, such as screen reader compatibility and enhanced keyboard navigation.
- Collaborated with Dr. Tamru Ewnetu, an Adaptive Technology Specialist, to ensure the website met accessibility standards.
- Implemented SEO strategies to ensure the site reaches its target audience effectively.
The Result
Phase One of the website is live, making it one of the first platforms in Ethiopia dedicated to braille technology and accessibility. The website is:
- Accessible to visually impaired users, thanks to carefully designed features.
- Optimized for search engines to increase visibility and impact.
- Ready for future upgrades to expand its capabilities and reach.
Looking Ahead
This project is just the beginning. We’re excited to continue working with the Center for the Blind in 2025 to enhance the platform, adding features like braille product catalogs, donation portals, and a knowledge hub for adaptive technologies.
